SGY Academic Overview
Completion of SGY does not automatically guarantee you entry into a college or university, but it will help. While admission to university programmes is based on a variety of factors, your academic performance in SGY can be an important determinant in college acceptance and will clearly influence the type of institution to which you should apply.
SGY will also help you make wise choices about where to apply and SGY staff will assist you with the entire application process
SGY will also:
- Allow you to take compulsory English and Maths classes, at an appropriate level, to prepare you for success in college/university courses and in your chosen career field
- Prepare you, where appropriate, for Advanced Placement or Advanced Level exams in a variety of subjects which may lead to the granting of credit and many North American universities
- Afford you the opportunity to benefit from a programme designed to build individual confidence and introduce important skills relevant to making a transition to independent living in the adult world
- Prepare you for entry-level jobs in the local community if you are seeking a career path in Bermuda, although its curriculum is predominantly in preparation for higher and further education
You may 'tailor' your programme:
- All SGY courses are designed to take you beyond GCSE level
- Some courses may have stated prerequisites, e.g. Foreign Languages and Sciences, but, in general, your SGY programme can be tailored to your individual goals and aspirations
- Each SGY course will have an examination at the end of Year 1 and at the end of Year 2. These examinations are the final element in a continuous assessment process.
- In Year 1, as part of your academic preparation for college and/or university, you will take a total of six courses, including one English and one Mathematics course
- In Year 2, you will study the same six courses, unless you have chosen a one-year course in Year 1 (in which case you will choose another one-year course offered in Year 2) or unless your teacher considers it inappropriate for you to continue with the course at a more advanced level. If you are taking an AP course in Year 2, you will be expected to sit the AP examination in May.
