Advanced Placement Courses Offered

What is Advanced Placement?

The Advanced Placement programme was founded over forty years ago by the American College Board of Princeton, New Jersey, and is recognized by over 3,700 US colleges and universities worldwide. More than 16,400 schools worldwide participate in the AP programme, and over 60% of US high schools offer AP courses. In 2007, 1.4 million students worldwide took more than 2.5 million AP exams.

Many colleges and universities recognize the AP programme; the list includes institutions such as Yale, Brown, Dartmouth and Princeton in the US ; McGill, Dalhousie, Acadia and Queen’s in Canada and Oxford, Cambridge and Edinburgh in the U.K.

Since its inception in 1974, the college/university preparatory programme offered at Saltus has provided an opportunity for local students to enroll in AP courses in a variety of subjects taught to internationally recognized standards.

Research shows that students who have taken AP courses in high school are better prepared for university work and that they consistently out-achieve their contemporaries by earning higher grade point averages.

Saltus AP Results

Saltus has participated in the Advanced Placement Programme since 1974 and, over the years, has had an excellent record of examination success.

In 2005, one SGY student became Bermuda’s first National AP Scholar. This award was granted to Bermuda by the College Board and it is a great honour since we are the first country outside the United States and Canada to receive such recognition. To become a National AP Scholar (Bermuda), a student must receive an average grade of at least 4 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on five or more of these exams. In that same year, three SGY students were recognized as AP Scholars with Distinction (granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams); one student was recognized as an AP Scholar with Honours (granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams); and one student was recognized as an AP Scholar (granted to students who receive grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

In the past, the majority of our graduating class has been granted AP credits at universities of their choice. Such success has enabled them to take higher level courses and, in some cases, to move directly into second year studies at university.

However, the AP experience has a wider effect than merely passes and test scores; many Saltus graduates who have taken AP courses in SGY find university coursework more manageable and even enjoyable!

Andrew Whale Bermuda’s first National AP Scholar; pre-med student
As a first-year Life Sciences student at Queen’s University,
Ontario, Andrew knows all about new challenges: his first semester brought new surroundings, new friends, living alone — and taking university courses. Thanks to his AP studies in the SGY Programme, the latter has proven a smooth transition. “I’m accustomed to the level at which courses are taught,” he says, “and since most topics in the first year are review, I can concentrate on adjusting to university life itself. SGY and the AP system provided me with challenging, yet rewarding courses that were extremely successful in preparing me for university.”
