On track to compete in 2012 Paralympics in London

6/7/2010

SGY1 Jessica’s Goal: To Compete in Wheelchair Track at the 2012 Paralympics in London.

SGY1 Jessica Lewis writes on her experience competing in Wheelchair Track in the Desert Challenge in Phoenix, Arizona, leading up to qualifying for the 2011 Worlds in January in New Zealand at which she hopes to qualify for her ultimate goal -- the 2012 Paralympics in London.

"I went to Phoenix in May to compete in Wheelchair Track at the Desert Challenge. This is an international paralympic meet. Before I was able to compete in these games, I had to be internationally classified in my disability category. I am a T53 which means I don’t have core muscles and have bad balance. We needed to go through this so that we knew who we would be able to race against. In these races I would race T53 women. This classification allows the race to be fair. I competed in the 100m and the 200m races, and came 2nd overall in both. My time for the 200m race was 39.34 seconds and 22.44 seconds for the 100m race. These times have qualified me for the Miramar track meet in Florida in June. I have to go to this meet in order to qualify for the World Championships in January 2011 in New Zealand. At the Worlds, I will be able to qualify for my ultimate goal: the 2012 Paralympics in London.”
