Bursaries

Saltus is committed to providing an education of the highest quality for all students and to fostering and encouraging what is best in the individual. The School welcomes applicants regardless of sex, race, religious preference or national origin. In order to maintain the diversity of our student body and to make Saltus accessible to young people of all socio-economic backgrounds, a strong bursary programme, administered by the Deputy Headmaster of the School, is maintained through annual giving, income from certain endowed funds, and other gifts from friends of the School. These bursaries fall into two categories. Scholarships – based primarily upon merit although, in specific instances, reflecting need as well - are awarded to qualified students. Certain Scholarships, classified as “Honorary Scholarships”, carry no financial reward, but the student’s achievement is recognized by the placement of his/her name on an Honours Board located in the Secondary Department. Financial Aid - based upon genuine need as indicated on the Financial Aid Statement, but awarded entirely at the discretion of the School - is available to those at all year levels who might otherwise not be able to enjoy the benefits of a Saltus education.

Financial Aid

Financial Aid is available to those at all year levels, except students entering the Foundation Year (unless special circumstances, determined at the discretion of the school, warrant) who might otherwise not be able to enjoy the benefits of a Saltus education.

The School’s Financial Aid Statement must be completed accurately and filed with the Admissions Office by March 31 (preceding the start of the school year in September). The same form is also used by all candidates for scholarships in which need is a factor. All information contained in the Statement is held in the strictest confidence and seen only by those with the responsibility for determining any awards to be made. Parents must notify the school immediately if there is any change in the family’s financial circumstances as indicated in the Statement after the deadline date. The amount of aid awarded is entirely at the discretion of the school and is for the year specified only. A new Financial Aid Statement must be filed by March 31 each year if continued assistance is to be considered. The award will be reviewed at that time and may be renewed at the same or at a different level, or may be terminated. Although aid is determined in the first instance by need, it is also held subject to the continued good academic standing and behaviour of the student concerned. Any significant decline in either could lead to the loss of any assistance.

Parents of students accepted into Saltus after March 31 each year are still able to apply for Financial Aid through the process described above. Such parents must appreciate that funds available for late applications may be more limited.

Aid is granted on the understanding that the portion of the school fee not covered by the award will be paid in full by the parent(s) before the conclusion of the academic year for which the aid was given. Failure to comply with this condition could lead to the withdrawal of the aid in future years.

Laptop Aid, for students entering the first year of the Laptop Programme, is determined in a similar manner, using the same form, although the deadline for application will vary according to when the latest laptop offer is received from the supplier.

All matters relating to Financial and Laptop Aid should be directed to the Deputy Headmaster.

Scholarships

Scholarships are not available to students below the Saltus 7 level.

Honorary Scholarships:

The Saltus Senior 7 Scholarship is an “Honorary Scholarship” recognizing the student who performs at the highest academic level during the Saltus 6 year, including the internal examinations taken at the end of the that  year. The student will be nominated by the Head of the Primary Department and his/her name will be placed on the Honours Board located in the main foyer of the Saltus 7 level of the Francis “Goose” Gosling Centre.

The Saltus Music Scholarship is an “Honorary Scholarship” given to a student entering Saltus 7 who, in the opinion of the Upper Primary Music Department, has not only demonstrated particular talent and ability in this field, but also contributed significantly to the musical life of the Department. The student may be required to audition and will be notified if this is the case. The recipient’s name will be placed on the Honours Board located in the main foyer of the Saltus 7 level of the Francis “Goose” Gosling Centre.

Scholarships awarded on the basis of merit and need include:

The BHS/Saltus Scholarship: created by the generosity of Mr. Ernest E. Stempel and is awarded to a Bermudian student showing academic promise but who is also in need of financial assistance to attend the Saltus Secondary Department. In order to be considered for this Scholarship, a student must be in the Primary 6 year at a local public primary school and must sit the Saltus 7 Entrance Examination. The parents must also submit a Financial Aid Statement to the Admissions Office by the deadline stipulated.  Short-listed candidates will be interviewed by the Deputy Headmaster of Saltus and by the Directors of the Saltus/BHS Scholarship Fund who will make the final decision. The Scholarship is valued at 80% of the school fees and is renewable annually, subject to the continued good academic standing, character and need of the recipient.

The Orbis Scholarship: created by the generosity of Orbis Investment Management, is awarded to a black Bermudian student demonstrating academic excellence and who is also in need of financial assistance to attend the Saltus Secondary Department. The student must have demonstrated leadership potential and good community spirit.  In order to be considered for this Scholarship, a student must sit the Saltus 7 Entrance Examination and the parents must submit a Financial Aid Statement to the Admissions Office by the deadline stipulated.  Short-listed candidates will be interviewed by the Deputy Headmaster of Saltus and by the Directors of Orbis Investment Management who will make the final decision. The Scholarship is valued at the level of the full annual school fee and is renewable annually for the student's entire career at the school, subject to the recipient maintaining grades in the upper quartile of the class and demonstrating continued need.  This award aims to recognize academic excellence, leadership and a commitment to the community.  Therefore, it is expected that the recipient will uphold the values by which this scholarship is awarded by seeking to make an important contribution to the Bermudian economy after their schooling.

The William "Bill" Jack Bursary: created to honour the memory of William (Bill) A. Jack, a Trustee of Saltus and a Partner of Deloitte prior to his sudden death in September 2008. The Bursary is funded by the generosity of the Partners of Deloitte Bermuda and is awarded to a Bermudian student entering the Saltus Graduate Years programme. The Bursary will cover the full tuition of the student for each year of the two-year programme. In order to be considered for this Bursary, a student must complete the application form which is available from the Admissions Office, and should have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement, leadership and service to the community. The parents will be required to submit a financial aid application and to demonstrate clear financial need. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed by the Bursary Selection Committee. The deadline for application is the last day of the Winter Term in the year prior to the Bursary taking effect.

The Élan Clinic Scholarship:  The Scholarship is worth $5,000 and is tenable for one year only. Since need is one of the criteria used for selection, the parents must submit a Financial Aid Statement to the Admissions Office by the deadline stipulated. The Scholarship is awarded to a student wishing to enter Saltus, at a level determined by the school, from the local public education system. Whenever appropriate, the student will also be interviewed by a representative of the Élan Clinic.

SGY Entrance Scholarships are available to students entering the SGY Programme from schools other than Saltus. The Scholarships, whose value will vary according to number and need, fall into two categories: those based upon academic merit alone, and those recognising not only ability but also the need for some financial assistance in meeting the costs of SGY. Separate application for an SGY merit scholarship is not necessary. All of those students who have submitted the necessary documentation required for admission are automatically considered for a scholarship, although final decisions are not made until all final examination grades are received from the applicant’s previous school.  Students seeking an award in which financial need is a consideration must file a Financial Aid Statement by March 31 of the year of application. Any award is applied towards fees and is tenable for the duration of the SGY course, although a marked decline in the student’s attainment and/or behaviour could lead to its withdrawal.

Saltus Association Scholarship, worth one half of the annual tuition fee, is made possible by the generosity and dedication of the members of the Saltus Association. The award is based upon merit and need as demonstrated on the school’s Financial Aid Statement which must be filed with the Admissions Office by March 31st. Although initially awarded for one year, the Scholarship may be renewed for further periods of one year subject to the continued good academic progress and need of the student.

The H. Chester Butterfield Scholarship is awarded in memory of a former Chairman of the Saltus Trustees. The Scholarship is awarded initially for one year only and its value will vary according to the number of recipients. Where more than one student is identified as a worthy recipient, the scholarship may be divided among those students. Parents must file a Financial Aid Statement with the Admissions Office by March 31st. Subject to the continued good academic progress and need of the student, the Scholarship may be renewed for further periods of one year as the recipient moves through the Secondary Department.

The Francis L. Stephenson Scholarship/Merit Awards are named after a former Deputy Headmaster who completed some 37 years of service to the School. Funding is derived from the annual Stephenson Golf Tournament and therefore both the number and the dollar amount of the awards will vary. Awards are made to students on the basis of need, although the recipients must also be of sound academic standing, and, initially, are for one year only. Parents must file a Financial Aid Statement with the Admissions Office by March 31. Subject to the continued good academic progress and need of the student, the Scholarship may be renewed for further periods of one year as the recipient moves through the Secondary Department.

Michelle Outerbridge Music Scholarships are available to students with musical talent and ability to assist them in meeting the additional cost of private lessons. It is assumed that the recipients will ultimately contribute to and enrich the musical life of the school. Recommendations are made by the Music Department and recipients are required to perform at the conclusion of the school year.  Decisions upon the renewal of the Scholarship are dependent upon the progress and commitment demonstrated by the recipient.

For students entering Higher Education:

The Saltus Grammar School Scholarship, made possible by the generosity of the late Mr. Francis ‘Goose’ Gosling and awarded in his memory, is available to a selected member of the graduating SGY class who has spent his/her entire secondary education at Saltus and has gained admission into an accredited university/college. It is given by the School as an expression of appreciation for the contribution made by the student both to the corporate life of the School in the widest sense, including academic attainment, and to the Bermudian community in general as an ambassador for Saltus. Financial need is not a determinant, except where it has been a contributing factor in measuring the excellence of some aspect of the student’s all-round contribution. The value of the Scholarship, which is awarded for one year only, is $2,500 and it is paid directly to the university/college to be attended. Applications are not made for the Scholarship. All SGY 2 students who meet the requirements are automatically eligible for consideration. The recipient is named at the Graduation Ceremony held at the end of the SGY year.

The Graduate Years University Scholarship(s): one Scholarship worth $3,000, or two worth $1,500 each, or three worth $1,000 each, are awarded to a graduating SGY student(s) to recognize outstanding academic performance in the SGY Programme and admission into a competitive university/college. Financial need, although not the principal determinant, is considered. Recipients are named at the Graduation Ceremony held in June of each year. The Scholarship(s), tenable for one year only, is paid directly to the university/college to be attended.

There can be no guarantee that all of the scholarships described above will be available every year.

All matters relating to Scholarships should be directed to the Deputy Headmaster.
