Overview of the Upper Primary Department

Upper Primary offers four years of education (Saltus Years 3 to 6) that are the equivalent of North American Grades 2 to 5, with students between the ages of seven and ten. There are four classes in each of the year levels.

The curriculum is designed to:

  • Help children develop lively, inquiring minds and to enhance their ability to question and argue rationally

  • Teach children to use language effectively and imaginatively in reading, writing and speaking

  • Provide the basis of mathematical, scientific and technical knowledge

  • Encourage children to become lifelong learners

  • Instill moral values, including respect for oneself, for other people and for all races, religions and ways of life

  • Foster an awareness and appreciation of the natural environment

The curriculum for Saltus Years 3 to 6 includes: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Art, Music, Physical Education, Life Skills, Information Technology, and Foreign Languages (French and Spanish). Children identified with learning difficulties are assisted by two Centre for Learning staff who work closely with the classroom teachers .

The Upper Primary calendar is filled with activities including intramural competitions between the four school Houses in sports such as swimming, soccer, softball, basketball, and in spelling and general knowledge competitions. Saltus Upper Primary teams participate in a number of inter-school sporting competitions. There is a lively club programme which is available to all students and which is managed by both teachers and parents. A large string orchestra, a wind band, two recorder ensembles and two choirs perform regularly at assemblies and in concerts.
