The Foundation Year
Introduction
The Foundation Year is important in preparing children for later schooling. The Early Years education we offer our children follows the recommendations of the Foundation Stage of the UK National Curriculum for children aged 3 – 5 years and is based on the following principles:
Effective Early Years education requires;
- Not only a relevant curriculum, but staff who understand it, and are able to implement it.
- The knowledge and understanding that children develop rapidly during the early years – physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially.
- Children to feel secure, included and valued.
- Experiences that build on what children already know and
can do.
- That no child is disadvantaged.
- That parents and teachers work together.
- That the curriculum be carefully structured to;
- Provide different starting points to develop learning from, building on what children already know.
- Include relevant and appropriate content that matches the different levels of young children’s needs.
- Include planned and purposeful activity that provides opportunities for teaching and learning, both indoors and outdoors.
- That children engage in activities they plan and initiate themselves as well as those planned by adults.
