Art and Design

The Art Department provides a framework for students to develop skills, knowledge and understanding in art and design. Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination. We seek to enable students to:

  • develop visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world.
  • use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think.
  • learn to make informed value judgments and aesthetic and practical decisions, becoming actively involved in shaping environments.
  • explore ideas and meanings in the work of artists, craftspeople and designers.
  • learn about the diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design in contemporary life, and in different times and cultures.
  • understand, appreciate and enjoy the visual arts which have the power to enrich our personal and public lives.

Key Stage 3 (Saltus 7 - 9)

The department follows the National Curriculum guidelines for Years 7, 8 and 9. Every student enjoys art experiences which are varied, and which might include drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, 3-dimensional design and construction, computer–aided design and photography.

Themes for projects can be as diverse as an exploration of a particular process, e.g. Pointillism, or a major world issue e.g. The Environment. Each year's work will explore skills to be learned and utilize topics which introduce and teach such skills. Projects are open-ended and enable a response at a number of ability levels. Students are encouraged to develop their ideas in a variety of ways, using both two and three-dimensional forms.

In Key Stage Three, the topics covered are: Light and Colour; Ancient Cultures/ Non-Western Art; Natural Forms; Drawing; Portraits; Colour Theory; Natural Forms – plants, seed pods, fruits vegetables etc; Architecture; Drawing; Graphic Design; Portraits; Natural Forms; 3 Dimensional Design

Key Stage 4 (Saltus 10 and Saltus 11)

Students in Saltus 10 and 11 follow a course which leads to a GCSE in Art and Design offered by the Edexcel Examination Board.

The Edexcel GCSE in Art & Design encourages an adventurous and enquiring approach to art & design. Successful students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of past and contemporary art and design practice and be able to produce a personal response that embraces a range of ideas. Students pursue not only practical artistic skills, but also the study of art and its various contents.

Disciplines associated with the Art & Design GCSE are: Painting and drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramic design, interior, product or environmental design, jewellery, constructed textiles, dyed textiles, woven textiles, knitted textiles, fashion, photography, film and video, advertising, illustration, packaging and typography.

The Graduate Years

Our Graduate Years students have the option to follow three courses:

The Advanced Placement Syllabus: students have the opportunity to pursue two of the three portfolios offered by the Advanced Placement Board: Drawing or 2-D Design.
