Mathematics

Mathematics education is fundamental to developing the skills necessary for future personal and career success. Our technological society demands citizens who are mathematically literate. This literacy includes problem solving and reasoning abilities, communicating through the language of Mathematics, and connecting Mathematics to other content areas and to life experiences.

The Mathematics programme at Saltus Grammar School seeks to promote the University of Cambridge IGCSE syllabus and to develop inquisitive attitudes, persistent workers and reflective thinkers. This is done by fostering positive mathematical experiences at the level of ability dictated by the individual student.

Key Stage 3 (Saltus 7 - 9)

In years 7, 8 and 9 we follow the MEP (Mathematics Enhancement Programme). This is a programme run by the University of Plymouth which has been adapted to follow the UK National Curriculum. All texts, resources and schemes of work can be found online at www.cimt.plymouth.ac.uk

Key Stage 4 (Saltus 10 and Saltus 11)

In years 10 and 11 we also follow MEP, however it is amended to include all topics contained in the IGCSE (University of Cambridge). All students sit this exam at the end of year 11. Again the above link will direct you to all relevant information.

The Graduate Years

SGY1 and SGY2: there are 4 courses available to students according to their ability levels and choice of destination for higher education.

  • Advanced Placement (Calculus AB) - This is a US based course run by the College Board. All relevant information can be found at www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/sub_calab.html.

  • A level modules - This is a UK based course. It is a continuation of the GCSE as outlined above. The curriculum can be found at www.cie.org.uk.

  • Advanced Algebra - This course will further the students’ knowledge in algebra to the extent that they can then go on to attempt some of the A-level modules outlined above.

  • Basic Mathematics - This will entail a further attempt at the IGCSE exam (for students who have failed to attain at least a C grade) in SGY1. In SGY2 students will follow the syllabus as set out in the first year of Advanced Algebra.
