Modern Languages
The Department provides a framework for students to develop skills, knowledge and understanding in a modern foreign language. We seek to enable students to:
-
develop understanding of the spoken and written forms of the language in a range of contexts
-
develop the ability to communicate effectively in the language, through both the spoken and written word.
-
develop knowledge and understanding of the grammar of the language, and how to apply it.
-
develop knowledge and understanding of the countries, communities and cultures of the target language
-
develop positive attitudes to modern foreign language learning, and an interest in and tolerance of other cultures
-
provide a suitable foundation for further study and practical use of the language.
-
develop critical thinking through analysis and discussion of contemporary themes, application of grammar, and evaluation of texts.
-
develop relationships with students in target and non-target language countries through the email link programme, Comenius project and language trips
Key Stage 3 (Saltus 7 - 9)
The Key Stage 3 curriculum follows the UK National Curriculum and uses the QCA schemes of work which are based on six topic areas per year. Topics are based on describing personal experience, for example family, school, health, leisure activities, holidays, home town, daily routine.
Key Stage 4 (Saltus 10 and Saltus 11)
The department follows the Edexcel foundation specifications leading to GCSE examinations in French and Spanish. These specifications provide a framework for the development of effective language learning and use of the target language. They combine an emphasis on communication skills with reward for practical knowledge and understanding of language structures and grammar. Rather than develop language within numerous topic areas, students are encouraged to adapt and apply their target language to specified contexts and situations. All examination papers are designed to match the language experience and maturity of candidates at Key Stage 4 and draw on some of the language knowledge developed at Key Stage 3. The specifications provide student-focused papers for listening and responding, speaking, reading and responding and writing. They also offer a written coursework option based on three topic areas.
The topic areas covered are: At home and abroad, Education, training and Employment, House, home and daily routine, Media, entertainment and youth culture, Social activities, fitness and health.
The Graduate Years
A level and Advanced Placement French and Spanish Language
Students follow a course designed to give them the opportunity to site both the UK A level and the US AP examinations. The course is based on a wide range of authentic materials as well as AP and A level course books and resources. The focus of both exams is on developing a high degree of competence in the four skills as well as an appreciation of Francophone or Hispanic culture.
