Science

The Science Department at Saltus Grammar School aims to carry out the following in their teaching of Science: -

  • To provide pupils with a science background which results in a broad basis of knowledge linked to the framework of the National Curriculum irrespective of ability, gender, race or social class.

  • To stimulate curiosity within the students and to use the curriculum to provide explanations to everyday observations and experience.

  • To develop the manipulative skills of the pupils through safe practical work.

  • To encourage pupils to develop an independent attitude towards their work to prepare them for careers and/or further study whether this be in the scientific field or not.

  • To develop the ability of the pupils to work with others as part of a team towards a common goal.

  • To promote an awareness of the inter-relationship of subject areas and the transfer and application of skills across the curriculum.

  • To produce pupils who have an awareness of environmental issues and feel a responsibility towards their environment.

  • To deliver the curriculum using a variety of teaching approaches and a diversity of resources.

  • To allow students to develop and attain their full potential.

  • To encourage students to enjoy science.

Key Stage 3 (Saltus 7 - 9)

Our Key Stage Three curriculum follows the programme of study for the English National Curriculum and includes topics that follow those laid out in the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) Schemes of Work.

Saltus 7

Cells, Reproduction,  Environment, Classification, Acids and alkalis, Chemical reactions, Particles, Solutions, Energy resources, Electrical circuits, Forces and their effects, The solar system and beyond

Saltus 8:

Microbes and disease, Food and digestion, Respiration, Ecology, Building blocks, Mixtures and Compounds, Rocks and the rock cycle, Sound, Energy Transfers, Magnetism, Light

Saltus 9:

Inheritance and selection, Sex and Drugs Education, Plants, Chemical reactions,  Environmental chemistry, Metals and their reactions, Energy and electricity, Gravity and space, Forces and motion

IGCSE Biology (Specification 4325) : Nature and variety of living organisms; Structures and functions in living organisms; Reproduction and inheritance; Ecology and the environment; Use of biological resources.

IGCSE Chemistry (Specification 4335) : Principles of chemistry; Chemistry of the elements; Organic chemistry; Physical chemistry; Chemistry in society

IGCSE – Physics (Specification 4420) : Forces and motion; Electricity; Waves; Energy resources and energy transfer; Solids, liquids and gases; Magnetism and electromagnetism; Radioactivity and particles
