Saltus Wins the Top Prize at National Schools Debate Tournament

On Saturday, 22nd November, one Senior Team and two Middle School Teams proudly represented Saltus at the National Schools Debate Tournament, hosted on our own campus in partnership with The Bermuda Debate Society. With 17 teams from BHS, Saltus, Somersfield Academy, Warwick Academy, and Whitney Institute, the tournament showcased exceptional critical thinking, confidence, and public speaking talent from students across the island.

Saltus’ Senior Team - Jordan Williams, Callie Lucas, and Christopher Madeiros - delivered an outstanding performance, winning the entire competition and securing the Victoria Cox Memorial Trophy for 1st Place Senior Team Overall. The team successfully defended their title in an impressive final round against BHS. Debating against the motion that developing countries should prioritize economic development over climate concerns, they earned praise from the judges for their cohesion, clarity, and analytical depth.
The team also achieved notable individual distinctions:
  • Christopher Madeiros – 3rd Place Senior Speaker
  • Jordan Williams – 5th Place Senior Speaker
  • Jordan Williams – Top Speaker in the Finals, receiving the prestigious David Saul Award for his exceptional delivery
The sense of community was further strengthened as several Saltus alumni returned to judge the competition, joining parents, staff, and students in support of this growing annual event.
This achievement comes on the heels of Saltus being named the “Best Overseas School” at the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition (IISPSC) in October, a global event featuring top student speakers from around the world.

Head of School Julie Rousseau praised the students’ accomplishments, saying: “Our students continue to demonstrate not only exceptional skill, but remarkable character. These achievements, both locally and on the international stage, reflect their passion and skill for thoughtful and reasoned communication. We are incredibly proud of the way they represent Saltus and Bermuda, and we look forward to seeing how they continue to grow confident leaders.”
