Counselor's Corner

Links & Information
Greetings Saltus Family,

These are strange times indeed! I hope this note finds you well as we adjust to this new normal as a school and community. As a member of the Student Support team, let me first say that we (Nurse, Counselor and Librarian) are here to support you as a family, both parents and children throughout the days ahead. We will be sending helpful links and information in the days and weeks ahead and welcome any and all feedback or questions.

Parents, please find a couple of links that I hope will be helpful in these early days of virtual school and Covid-19. The first link offers a wealth of information, some of which I am sure you have heard or read and discussed as a family by now, however I believe it is a good point of reference from one of my preferred sources, the National Association of School Psychologists.

The second link is a short clip from Harvard professor Richard Weissbourd, who highlights several important points about talking with our children. Spoiler alert, my favorite point he makes, is to let the children guide the conversation. Often, we as adults tend to think we know what is on their mind, however if we rather provide the space for them to share what they are wondering or worrying about we can better support them. For example, my son just this morning shared concerns about his artwork he submitted to the Ag show. Now, I can honestly say, this was not on my radar as we embarked on our morning routine, but certainly it was on his and because I was available to listen, we were able to come to terms with the uncertainty ahead together.

If you would like to reach me, the best way is via my school email Nic.Scanlon@saltus.bm, from there we can determine whether to schedule a skype or phone call. When a student reaches out via email during this time, I will be intentionally copying their parent into my response regarding scheduling any skype sessions.

If you or your child is experiencing a mental health emergency, please contact Child & Adolescent Services on 239-6344 for a risk assessment during normal business hours 9-5, M-F. After normal business hours, you can call the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute on 236-3770 – 24 Hour Service.

Going forward, as we enter different phases to this new normal, please check back here as this is where the Student Support team will be sending regular updates.

Best regards,

Nic Scanlon
