Saltus Achieves EcoSchools Certification – A Milestone in Our Sustainability Journey

We are thrilled to announce that on Thursday, 24th June, Saltus was officially awarded EcoSchools status by representatives from EcoSchools right here in Bermuda! This is a powerful recognition of our unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that it was only a few short months ago that the Saltus Eco Committee was established. With passionate representation from administration, Lower Primary, Upper Primary, and Secondary School staff, the committee has worked tirelessly toward certification through EcoSchools Canada, and today, we celebrate the result of that dedication.

Our Vision: A Greener Saltus, a Better Planet
For years, Saltus has championed environmental initiatives across our campuses and is integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into our educational programmes. From environmental literacy to tangible green actions, we are shaping students to be global citizens who understand the importance of sustainable living.

Our mission is reflected in our actions —from promoting clean energy and water access to encouraging sustainable consumption, protecting biodiversity, and combating climate change. We’re embedding these principles into our classrooms, our culture, and our campus life.

Leading with Action: Saltus Sustainability Highlights
Here are just a few of the transformative initiatives we’re proud of:
  • Solar Energy Expansion: Both of our campuses have seen a significant rollout of solar energy over the last five years.
  • Eco-Friendly Bento Boxes: We distribute BPA-free lunch containers to reduce single-use plastic.
  • Eco Visionaries Club: A student-led group committed to monthly beach cleanups across all Bermuda parishes, in partnership with Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB).
  • Student Eco Ambassadors: Eight passionate Grade 5 leaders, selected and mentored by the Eco Visionaries, are driving sustainable change in Upper Primary.
  • Protecting Native Ecosystems: Since 2002, we’ve committed to removing non-native species from Saltus Island and our school grounds.
  • Marine Art from Plastic Waste: We turn plastic collected from beach cleanups into powerful works of art, educating our students about marine pollution and sustainable practices.
  • Eco Code Commitment: Our school website proudly showcases our Eco Code, aligned with the global mission to meet the UN’s 2030 goals.

Looking Ahead
Earning the EcoSchools designation is not the end—it’s just the beginning. With this status now in hand, we are more energised than ever to scale our efforts, innovate boldly, and build a legacy of sustainability that empowers future generations.

Together, we will continue to spark change, inspire action, and nurture a sustainable future for Bermuda and for our planet.
