Saltus Students Make Waves with Atlantic-Ready Research Miniboat

Saltus students are preparing to launch Coral Tempest, a student-built miniboat designed to collect ocean and weather data as it crosses the Atlantic. Senior students in Mr. Paul Wright’s Oceanography class built the miniboat from a kit provided by Educational Passages, combining science, innovation, and real-world learning in a first-of-its-kind project for Bermuda.

The goal is to launch the miniboat on Tuesday, 6th January (weather dependent), with the support of BIOS. Powered by wind and solar energy, Coral Tempest will be tracked via GPS as it journeys across the ocean. From designing the sail to installing sensors and solar panels, every aspect of the project was student-led.

This initiative is part of Educational Passages, a global program that connects students through ocean science, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math) learning, and maritime exploration.

We invite you to follow along as students track its adventure at sea once it is launched: https://educationalpassages.org/boats/coral-tempest
