STEM Challenge

In the annual “Cardboard Boat Challenge” held at National Stadium last week, Saltus entered five teams. The competition, organized by the Institute of Bermudian Architects and Bermuda Association of Professional Engineers, was started several years ago by prominent Colleges/Universities and is participated on a global level.

The event is designed to encourage students to collaborate and solve problems under pressurized conditions. Teams are given two hours to engineer their vessel and then race it across a 50m pool, hopefully without sinking.

The fastest time recorded by Saltus was team “Chivas” which comprised of Robin Stempel, Jessie Marshall, Lily Beaulne and Natalie Lightbourne. Congratulations to them for coming 4th out of 20 local teams that entered and to all of the Saltus teams for making it a fun day:

  • Team “Sink or Swim”: Ryan Topple, Shane Krueger, Scott Gilbertson (2017 Winners)
  • Team “Batz and Tingz” : Jared Souza, Sam Palmer, Christian Truran
  • Team “Boat Builders” :George Kerr, Themika Thennakoon, Tommy Marshall, William Rossiter
  • Team “No Way Out”: Peter Komposch, Tiago Rebelo, Nik Froud
  • Team “Chivas”: Robin Stempel, Jessie Marshall, Lily Beaulne and Natalie Lightbourne
