A team from Saltus joined four (4) other Island schools this week at Somersfield Academy (Wednesday 24th April 2019, 12.30pm – 3.30pm) for the Canadian Team Mathematics Contest (CTMC), organised by the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing at the University of Waterloo.
The aim of the contest was to promote the learning and enjoyment of mathematics. Activities included:
• Team questions, where team members may collaborate (45min) • Individual problems (45min) • Math relays – one student’s answer to a question is needed by a teammate to solve the next question (45min).
The curriculum and level of difficulty of the questions was designed for both Middle and Senior school participants and was extremely challenging. Saltus participants performed exceptionally well, going into the final round in joint first place. Unfortunately a couple of errors in the relay would ensure they finished a respectable second place. The students should be proud of their efforts and we look forward to going one better next year.
The following Saltus students should be commended for their hard work and excellent problem solving skills; Kathleen Brown, Alex Southern, Trent Harris, Clarke Jeffrey, Aran Giffen and Sophia Banner.
