The Annual Middle Inter School Field Hockey Tournament was held on Thursday, 18th May 2019 at the National Sports Centre. Saltus entered two teams in both the girls and boys divisions.
The middle school girls had a very successful day at the hockey tournament. The Saltus white team was made up of mostly younger students and they improved immensely throughout the day. They won one game against an experienced BHS team and it is also testament to them that they only lost 2-0 to our other Saltus team, who beat other teams very convincingly. The Saltus red team was made up of a lot of experienced hockey players and this showed with their domination on the day. They went undefeated in all their games, in fact, not a single goal was scored against them. They beat a talented Warwick Academy team in the final to win 4-0 to top off a very successful tournament.
The boys tournament consisted of a complete round robin with the 5 teams that were present, then the top two teams played in the final.
In round robin play the white team secured 1 win and 3 losses to finish 4th overall. The team lost their first game to WA I, 2-0 but the game was tied 0-0 with minutes to play. The boys won their second game against WA II, 1-0 with a goal from Nicholas Southern. They then lost to our red team 0-5 and to Somersfield 1-3.
The red team, mostly made up of our year 9’s, won the tournament with 4 wins and 0 losses in round robin play and then with a victory in the final.
In their first game of the round robin, the Saltus Reds defeated WA II, 4-0, with goals from Sebastian Kempe (assist Bobby Bart), Ryan Lemoine (goal mouth scramble), Nicholas Pepi (individual effort) and Cooper McGuire (assist Jacob Adderley).
In game two, they beat Somerfield 7-0, with 4 goals from Jonah Faria, 2 from Jacob Adderley and 1 from Sebastian Kempe. In their third game of the day, the boys defeated Saltus Whites 6-0, with goals from Faria, Kempe, Lemoine, Bart and McGuire (2). In their final round robin game, the Saltus Reds defeated WA I, 4-2, with scores from Adderley, Kempe and Faria and one penalty goal.
Saltus Reds faced a very different Somersfield team in the final. They improved over the course of the day and finished the round robin with 3 wins and 1 loss. Somersfield would score first at the 48 second mark, but Saltus replied 30 seconds later with a goal from Adderley. Bart and Faria added one goal each to help Saltus win the final 3-1 and the tournament undefeated.
CONGRATULATIONS to all of the teams!
