BSSF Volleyball Championships

The Annual BSSF volleyball championships were held Friday, November 22nd at MSA.  Saltus entered three teams.  One in the ‘B’ division and two in the ‘A’ division.  I have to say that this is the first time in my memory of the tournament, that we have been able to enter two teams in the A division who were good enough to do so.
In the B division, the teams played each other twice as there were only 3 teams.  Saltus defeated WA B and Somersfield in all games played to move onto the final against WA B, who had two wins and two losses.
In their first game, the boys took and early 11-1 lead and never looked back, winning the game convincingly 25-11.
In the second game, WA were more organized and pushed harder.  We were down by 6 points at one point, but the boys came back to win the game 25-21, and were crowned BSSF B division Champions.
In the A division, the Saltus REDS (‘A’ team) went undefeated in round robin play, defeating MSA, WA A and SALTUS Whites, to be seeded first going into the semi-finals.  The WHITE team (‘B’) was defeated in all three games to place fourth.  In the semi-finals, #1 played #4 and #2 played #3, which meant Saltus Reds and Whites met each other.
It turned out to be a very intense and well played game.  Saltus Reds took the early lead but at 11-11, the Whites went ahead and stayed ahead.  The rallies were amazing and the game was close till the end, with the Whites defeating the Reds 25-23, to go onto the final.
WA defeated MSA in another tight semi-final.
Our White team, made up of a couple of different players, defeated WA in League play last week, two games to one, so they knew they had as good a chance to beat the favourites.  Our boys did not disappoint.  They played with guts and never gave up.
The boys lost the first game 26-24.  In the second game the lead changed several times, and with the score 22-24 to WA, most people thought WA had it in the bag.  BUT our very determined boys, came back to win the game 26-24.  The third game was played to 15 points.  The boys fought hard, but with the taller and more experienced WA team, they lost another close one 12-15.
It was an amazing night for the Knights.  They have two league games left this week to end the season.  The REDS are undefeated so far and could still win the league.
We look forward to what these boys have to offer next year.  But sadly, we have to say farewell to five of our SGY 2’s; Captains Tyler Hurdle and Cody Richardson, Dimitri Jackson, Owen DeCosta and Victor Capitillo.  They have been integral to the school teams.  They will be missed next year.
This Friday, 29th November, is the GIRLS tournament at MSA starting at 4 pm.  There are two divisions, A and B.  Our B team has gone undefeated this season and has won their league.  The A team has 1 win and 3 losses and are underdogs for the tournament.  However, if the girls ‘show up to play’ it’s anyone’s tournament on the day.
